The bridge is unusual in that three separate bridges were each built, one atop the other. The most recently built is an iron bridge (1901), which was built over a stone bridge (1753), which was built when the original bridge was thought to be unstable.
The builders of the 1753 bridge used the original bridge (built 1075–1200) to support scaffolding during construction.
With the waves of refugees and other various persons attempting to storm the fences and borders of Europe running into water cannons, hastily thrown up twelve foot fences, riot police, military forces and Heaven knows what other obstacles. It is like all of a sudden we have Apartheid Europe. The media have noted that Angela Merkel, Prime Minister of Germany, who had pledged to give refuge to eight-hundred-thousand Syrian and other refugees, has thrown up every conceivable barrier assuring Germany is closed at the borders and probably had not even allowed eight-thousand, let alone eight-hundred-thousand, refugees across her borders. Many have probably asked themselves that all important question all things in the Middle East eventually come around to, what has Israel done and how can we place the blame on Israel and force them to take in every last refugee. Well, I will give the small amounts I can remember…

Reykjavik, Iceland’s Capital City, has taken a vote on a motion presented by Björk Vilhelmsdóttir, an outgoing councilwomen representing the Social Democratic Alliance, to boycott all products from Israel, not just the “territories” or the “occupied areas” but all goods Israeli until Israel has pulled all Israelis and other objects of the occupation from all Palestinian areas and allowed the Palestinian peoples to have their own independent homelands. There have been claims that since there have been no actual boycott items list, that this was purely a symbolic vote with some claiming it was just done as a parting gift for the retiring councilwoman. When I was growing up, “filibuster” was a dirty word. It was a tactic used by bigoted southern Senators to prevent the enactment of any civil rights legislation. I recall Senator Strom Thurmond babbling on for 24 hours in an effort to keep the south racially segregated. We regarded the filibuster as the enemy of democracy and the weapon of choice against civil rights.
Yet, President Obama and his followers in the senate deployed this undemocratic weapon in order to stifle real debate about the nuclear deal with Iran and to prevent the up or down vote promised by the Corker bill. A President, who was more confident of the deal, would have welcomed the Lincoln-Douglas type debates that I and others had called for regarding the most important foreign policy decision of the 21st century.
Brenda was a mean girl. We were thrown together because we went to Sunday School together. She was snooty but tolerated me the best she could in Sunday School because I was preferable to Mary Bragg, an overweight girl who constantly complained other girls were “talking” about her. We usually weren’t, because we’d already done that and moved on. I guess I was a mean girl wanna be.
At any rate, Though Brenda could tolerate me at Sunday School, it was a different story at school. Sometimes I tried to buddy up to her, only to be rebuffed when a real friend came along. The thing about Brenda was, she was mad about horses. I had a horse. From time to time, her yearning to ride a horse got the best of her and she’d ask to come ride my horse. I was a friendly kid who’d have played with…
