The Hat

99999An elderly lady was standing at the railing of the cruise ship
holding her hat tight so that it would not blow away in the wind.

A gentleman approached her and said,
“Pardon me, madam..
I do not intend to be forward but did you know that your dress
is blowing up in this high wind?”

“Yes, I know,” said the lady.
“I need both my hands
to hold onto this hat.”

“But madam, you must know that you are not wearing any panties
and your privates are exposed!” said the gentleman in earnest.

The woman looked down, then back up at the man
and replied, “Sir, anything you see down there is 75 years old.
I bought this hat just yesterday!”

Open Letter to the French President

Dear Mr. President,

First, I wish to express my deep condolences over the killing of innocent citizens in the recent terror attacks in Paris.

Second, I want to apologize to Your Excellency for not revealing my true identity. After you read my letter, you will realize why people like me are afraid to reveal their real identity.

I decided to write to you this letter after hearing my president, Mahmoud Abbas, declare that you had invited him to attend the anti-terror rally in Paris earlier this week.

Like many Palestinians, I see President Abbas’s participation in a rally against terrorism and assaults on freedom of speech as an act of gross hypocrisy — a condition that is not alien to Palestinian Authority leaders.

Netanyahu Invite by Congress May End the World

Beyond the Cusp

If one listens to the Liberal, Progressive, Socialist political fronts from both sides if the American-Israeli divide one might get the opinion that a great transgression had occurred as the Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner invited Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu to appear before the United States Congress. The hue and cry from these corners over the timing of the invitation claiming that it is a sneaky ploy by Netanyahu to appear on the world stage to make points immediately before the coming election might originate from an actual and very valid complaint providing there is proof that Prime Minister Netanyahu actually had a hand in arranging this invitation. There have been calls from both nations for an invitation to also be extended to the Labor Party leader Yitzhak Herzog to speak before the United States Congress. This manufactured end of the world scenario, if one is to…

LEON BRITTAN: Yes indeed, show us the evidence

The Slog

leonbritt15Brittan is dead, but the shadow of doubt remains

Dan Hodges special pleading for the late Home Secretary simply won’t do

Leon Brittan is no more. His departure has been (predictably) celebrated by all those of the Westminster ilk, and doubtless in the coming days all those of us who harbour suspicions about this man will be told that we “should not speak ill of the dead”. Having libeled (in theory) the bloke some 44 times while he was alive, I’m afraid such pleas will fall on stoney ground with me.

Again, a little throat-clearing if I may. Those who follow The Slog regularly will know by now that I have grave doubts about the veracity of paedophile claims against everyone from Rolf Harris to yes, even Jimmy Savile. I don’t say either man – or those in between – are without guilt and shame: I just don’t think the…

Some statistics the BBC R4 statistics programme managed to ignore

BBC Watch

On January 19th BBC Radio 4’s statistics programme ‘More or Less’ included an item (available from 07:44 here) described in the webpage synopsis as follows:More or Less

“In the wake of the Paris killings, an imam in Paris told the BBC that 95% of terrorism victims around the world are Muslim. Is that true? More or Less speaks to Erin Miller of the Global Terrorism Database.”

Included in that item is a discussion between presenter Tim Harford and producer Ruth Alexander of what counts as terrorism.

TH: “But wait: what counts as terrorism? I mean saying that something is terrorism or isn’t terrorism – I mean this is something that politicians do all the time purely for their own convenience.”

RA: “It is, so the Global Terrorism Database has a particular methodology. They label an attack terrorism and put it into this data base if it’s intentional, violent or threatening…

The public spat between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and US President Barack Obama’s administration escalated further Friday evening, with US officials reportedly charging that it will be “hard to trust” Netanyahu, following the fallout from the announcement Wednesday that the PM would address Congress in two months, a move he failed to coordinatewith the White House.

“It will be difficult to trust…
