Washington, D.C. – Human Rights First today urges the United States to publicly condemn the unfair trials of Bahrain Human Rights Defenders Mahdi Abu Deeb and Jalila al Salman in advance of their final appeal at the Court of Cassation scheduled for Monday. Abu Deeb, President of the Bahrain Teachers’ Association (BTA), and al Salman, Vice President of the Bahrain Teachers’ Association, were tortured into making false confessions and jailed in 2011 following their participation in peaceful protests.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled to neighboring Jordan from their home country in light of the ongoing war in Syria. The distress in the hopelessly overcrowded refugee camps is great. Unscrupulous traffickers have recognized this and made a business out of it. So-called ‘matchmakers’ sell Syrian refugee teenager girls to rich Wahhabis from Saudi Arabia.
Men mainly coming from Saudi Arabia and the rest from the Gulf states arrive at these camps to exploit females of all ages.
A growing legion of Muslim men from the Mideast and Europe are scouring Syrian refugee camps in order to purchase underage girls, some as young as 12, as child brides, many of whom end up being sold for use in temporary “pleasure marriages.”
