Incredibly Detailed Close-Ups of Van Gogh’s Masterpieces

The Google Art Project is a collaboration with museums large and small, classic and modern, world-renowned and community-based from over 40 countries. Together they have contributed more than 40,000 high-resolution images of works ranging from oil on canvas to sculpture and furniture.

Some paintings (like The Starry Night) are available in ‘gigapixel’ format, allowing you to zoom in at brushstroke level to examine and appreciate the incredible detail of these masterpieces.

In addition to the high-resolution images, each artwork also features expertly-narrated videos, audio guides, viewing notes, detailed information, maps and more. It’s a remarkable online resource and one that’s worth exploring.

Below you will find a small selection of the 150+ featured artworks of Dutch post-Impressionist, Vincent Van Gogh. I selected paintings that were available to view in very high-resolution so I could zoom in extremely close-up and capture the brush stroke details.

The Guardian asks if 4.9 million Palestinian “refugees” will “return” to cities…where they never lived.

UK Media Watch

Those who get their news from the mainstream media (or the Guardian) could be forgiven for believing that there are nearly 5 million Palestinian refugees from the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli War.

So often is that figure bandied around that most don’t understand that it only reflects the number of Palestinians qualifying for “refugee” benefits under the bizarre formula of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency by which thechildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (ad infinitum) of actual refugees continue to inherit this status.  This designation is even bestowed upon those Palestinians who are already citizens of other countries.

(Using such demographic calculus, one could argue that – based on the number of Israelis whose ancestors fled Europe during the Holocaust, or fled Arab countries due to antisemitic persecution – the majority of Israeli citizens are “refugees”.)

Indeed, the number of actual Palestinian refugees from the Arab-Israeli War, out of…

Before my time there were a lot of wars.  A couple were pretty big – so we called them World Wars.  The name of what was originally called, “The War To End All Wars” didn’t live up to its billing.  So we had another World War and rather than using the titles Sr. and Jr. we chose to use the Roman numerals I and II.  I guess that was just so that if any more wars arose later of the same scale it would make it easier to name them.

During the Second World War, Americans were called on to make sacrifices.  We shipped our young men overseas, many of whom never came home to their moms or their wives.  And in their absence, we asked the women of America not only to sacrifice their husbands and sons and brothers but to contribute to the war effort by accepting food rationing and…

A group of men demonstrated on Saturday in front of the Dutch Embassy in London demanding the release of the Zoetermeer. Other groups also protested for her release in Germany and France.

The 19-year-old from Zoetermeer, named Oum Usamah, was arrested two weeks ago for trying to recruit Dutch Muslims for the civil war in Syria. Via the internet she called upon Muslims in several European countries to protest her arrest.

In London, a group of men demonstrated in front of the Dutch embassy on Saturday morning. They called upon Muslims worldwide to stand up for their sister. ‘We’re doing everything we can to free her’ and carried signs with text in English and Dutch, including one that said ‘Sharia for the Netherlands’.
