A Muslim religious group is leading the calls for secession, saying Zanzibar should pull out of the mainland and adopt political Islam. Their goal is to turn Zanzibar in to a sharia-ruled Islamic state where Christians would be forced to convert or be killed.
Muslim protesters on the East African island of Zanzibar are calling for their own separate state, fifty years after it joined with mainland Tanganyika to form the Republic of Tanzania. The push for secession has left Zanzibar’s Christian minority in fear for their lives.

This article, although here for the first time,  was published in June 2010 so adding the word ‘Flashback’ seemed appropriate. A post by Dr Mercola ( Mercola.com ) firmly advocating caution regarding statin drugs.

Doctors are being warned to think more carefully about prescribing cholesterol-lowering drugs by researchers who have found a wide range of “unintended” side effects.

Some doses and types of statins are linked with effects that include liver problems and kidney failure.

BBC News reports:

“Researchers looked at data from more than two million 30-84 year-olds from GP practices in England and Wales over a six-year period. Adverse effects identified in the study, published in the British Medical Journal, include liver problems, acute kidney failure, muscle weakness and cataracts.”

Chinese authorities are speeding up construction work in Sansha, a newly formed city located on a disputed island in the West Philippine Sea.

A report posted on China‘s government web portal Sunday said authorities mapped out plans for four infrastructure projects and started a housing program.

The infrastructure projects include road construction, water supply and drainage on Yongxing Island, where the city government is seated, the report said.

Sansha City will be located in a disputed area in the West Philippine Sea where a 34-year-old Philippine town in Palawan province has claims, particularly the Pag-asa Islet.

The Spratly Islands and other islets in the West Philippine Sea are a subject of a territorial dispute by the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.

China had said Sansha City is to administer over 200 islets, sandbanks and reefs in Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha islands, but Kalayaan…

Writing Between the Lines

Scientists say that 55 to 65 million years ago, the North of Ireland was subject to volcanic activity, and that molten lava cooled rapidly, creating fractures in the rock that looked like giant stone pillars, some reaching a height of nearly 40 feet.

It made a vivid pattern in the rock…

…and was such a unique natural phenomenon that in 1986  UNESCO named it World Heritage Site.

But if you ask me, that’s a bunch of blarney.  Better yet, ask any local.  He’ll tell you what really happened is that a giant named Finn MacCool was building a causeway to Scotland.

A Scottish giant named Benandonner tracked Finn to the causeway, looking for a fight.  He wanted to prove he was the greatest giant of them all.  He had already tracked down and beaten every other giant in Ireland, and Benandonner wanted to serve up Finn with the same sauce.

In “Dreams From My Father” President Obama discusses extensively his father’s anti-colonial spirit and motivations.  Were this simply a documentary about his father and not a blueprint for the President’s own view of the world, the book might have been better titled, “Dreams Of My Father.”  I can only presume that the President, a person with several college degrees, made a conscious choice in entitling his work.

It will come as no secret that the most fundamental goal of most extreme Islamic cadres is this – the complete and utter destruction of Israel.  Those are not my words but theirs.

Corollary to that is the undermining of those governments it sees as supporting the continuance of the Israeli state – notably the United States and the United Kingdom ( but pretty much any western, non-Islamic country may be included in the list).

The United States is an obvious choice for…

Don’t you think it ridiculous to commission an aircraft carrier without aircraft?

And the commissioning ceremony was so grand that it was attended by both General Secretary Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

If the carrier remains without aircraft for a long time, will it not become a laughingstock instead of something they can boast of?

Trefor Moss, an independent journalist based in Hong Kong and former Asia-Pacific editor for Jane’s Defence Weekly, said, “the Liaoning’s primary objective” is “not to make other countries feel scared; but to make Chinese people feel proud”.

Let’s remember that China began to refit the carrier about 8 years ago when there was no tension in the East and South China Seas, so that there is no need to make Chinese people feel proud for the carrier. Certainly, China made its long-term plan for the development of its aircraft fleet long ago…
