A few hours before the caucuses in Nevada closed on Saturday, the campaign of the ex-house speaker, Newt Gingrich, sent out an email saying that he would be holding a news conference once the state’s voting had been completed. It is a sign of how his bid for the White House is currently regarded that this was initially interpreted as being a sign that he was about to pull out of the race.
He had received a bruising in Florida and Nevada, with its large Mormon population, was going very badly for him. He simply did not have the resources to cope with Mitt Romney’s hugely effective negative campaign. At the press conference, however, Gingrich said that rather than pulling out he would continue in the race right through to the party convention in Tampa at the end of August.
